Europe Dominates, ROW Growing Fast in Automotive IC Market
Europe forecast to account for 40% of the $11.5 billion automotive IC Market in 2004

The European automotive IC market is forecast to grow 23 percent to $4.5 billion in 2004, representing 40 percent of the $11.5 billion worldwide automotive IC market. Europe became the world’s largest market for automotive ICs in 1997 and has maintained that position each year since then. IC Insights forecasts that Europe will remain the largest market for automotive ICs, growing to $6.7 billion and accounting for 37 percent of the $18.1 billion automotive IC market in 2008 (Figure 1).

Figure 1

The European automotive market for MCUs is significantly greater than other regions. Sales of automotive MCUs are forecast to reach $1.8 billion, or 39 percent of the European automotive IC market, in 2004. Luxury vehicle manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW are among the most aggressive automotive companies when it comes to implementing advanced technology in cars. It is not uncommon for 70 or more MCUs to be located throughout top-end vehicles supplied by these two manufacturers. Meanwhile, all three major European IC vendors (Infineon, STMicroelectronics, and Philips) are listed among the top 5 automotive IC suppliers for 2004.

Figure 1 also shows that the ROW region is forecast to be the fastest-growing region for automotive ICs through 2008, and will capture additional marketshare in the next five years. Growing demand for automobiles, particularly from China, will drive automotive IC growth in the ROW region to just under $4.0 billion in 2008, resulting in a 2004-2008 CAGR of 25 percent.

IC Insights’ newly released Emerging IC Markets 2005 publication is filled with additional resources on the automotive IC market, including regional and product-specific data. The report includes an extensive IC end-use application database and forecast as well as individual sections covering automotive electronics, wireless networking, cellular phones, video game machines, digital cameras, PCs, DVDs, digital TVs, and more. The single copy report price is only $1,990 (binder or CD-ROM) with Internet-access and company-wide use license options also available.
