Section 10. Microcontrollers and Digital Signal Processors |
|||||
|
Microcontrollers are among the most ubiquitous of all integrated circuits. From 4-bit to 32-bit devices, microcontrollers are used to control and monitor both simple and extremely complex functions in the home, automobile, and office. This section reviews market, unit shipment, and pricing data and provides a review of the different segments of the MCU market. Although digital signal processor (DSP) technology is complex and challenging, a few companies have mastered it and stand to gain the most in this expanding market. With their capability to quickly process highly complex functions and algorithms, DSPs may some day overtake MCUs and MPUs to be the preferred logic device. |
