Section 10. Microcontrollers and Digital Signal Processors |
|||||
Microcontrollers are among the most ubiquitous of all integrated circuits. From 4-bit to 32-bit devices, microcontrollers are used to control and monitor both simple and extremely complex functions in the home, automobile, and office. This section reviews market, unit shipment, and pricing data and provides a review of the different segments of the MCU market. Although digital signal processor (DSP) technology is complex and challenging, the few companies that have mastered it stand to gain the most in this market. With their capability to quickly process highly complex functions and algorithms, DSPs will continue to challenge MCUs and MPUs as the preferred logic device. |
