1H04 Top 10 Semiconductor Company Rankings Released

Samsung’s semiconductor sales explode! Infineon jumps two spots to rank 5th worldwide

Scottsdale, Arizona — July 21, 2004 — IC Insights today released its ranking of the worldwide top 10 semiconductor suppliers for the first half of 2004 (Figure 1).  With three suppliers from the U.S., three from Japan, two from Europe, one from Korea, and one from Taiwan, the list is a balanced representation of geographic regions.

According to statistics recently generated by IC Insights for its new Mid-Year Update to The McClean Report, Intel, Samsung, TI, and Renesas maintained their number one through four positions, respectively, among the worldwide top 10 semiconductor suppliers.  Other first half 2004 ranking highlights include:

— Total 1H04/1H03 sales for the top 10 semiconductor companies grew 33 percent.  The worldwide semiconductor market grew slightly faster in 1H04 increasing 35 percent to $101.5B from $75.0B in 1H03.

— Only four companies had sales growth rates above the 1H04/1H03 top 10 average of 33 percent: Samsung, TSMC, Texas Instruments, and Infineon.

— Infineon jumped from 7th in the 2003 full-year top 10 semiconductor ranking to 5th in the 1H04 ranking.  The company registered a 35 percent 1H04/1H03 sales increase.

— Samsung’s 1H04 semiconductor sales increased 80 percent when compared to 1H03!  The company’s gains in the flash memory market were a driving force behind this surge.

It is interesting to note that if Samsung were excluded from the top 10 ranking, the remainder of the semiconductor sales leaders (the other nine companies) would have registered only a 28 percent 1H04/1H03 growth rate.  IC Insights’ forecast for full-year 2004/2003 worldwide semiconductor industry growth is 32 percent.
